One of the tools to encourage innovation and interaction among academia, business, government, and community (quadro helix) is Science and Technology Park (STP). STP plays a role in the economic development through a dynamic and innovative mix of policies, programmes, quality space and facilities and high value-added services. Moreover, STP will contribute to improve the competitiveness and regional economy on the basis of innovation, resources, and knowledge of local area. The development of STP needs policy support from the central government and local governments. As a developing country in Asia Pacific region, Indonesia is currently working to develop STP as a center of growth by collaborating with overseas, especially the State boundary. Therefore, the concept of STP is essential not only to flow the knowledge but also to attract partnerships with various parties. The session will discuss the role of government in supporting the development of STP, strengthening the networks between the triple helix elements for innovation, improving competitiveness and economy within the framework of regional innovation systems, and sharing experience in developing STP.
The world economy is now largely supported by the contributions of entrepreneurs who has been creating thousands of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). To foster the development of SMEs, especially the innovation-based SMEs, it needs support from various stakeholders such as government and large industry. The Governments could create a favorable business climate by providing funding support, complimentary policies, and facilitate the product improvement through the use of innovation technology. The increasing number of SMEs innovation-based could lead to higher competition and at the end it will improve the regional economy. In addition, the development of SMEs could promote networking and partnerships within the country and overseas. The session will provide a thorough overview of the SMEs in the framework of innovation-based regional economic development.
Innovation cluster is a tool to boosting regional economic growth where public and private sector can meet and interact to develop ideas, innovate and bring it to the market. In the context of sustainable development, innovation cluster become an accelerator to foster knowledge and innovation by integrating the environmental, social, and economic elements. There are many innovation clusters that have been driven by local knowledge and young innovator leading to improving the regional economy. The session will provide knowledge on the innovation cluster development policy, innovation cluster role in sustainable development, and strengthening the innovation cluster networks to boost local economic growth.
